You or someone you know has likely encountered bed bugs while on vacation, away on a business trip, or even at home. Unfortunately, bed bug infestations are more common than you might think, but they have nothing to do with cleanliness. That's right, it has nothing to do with how tidy you are and everything to do with exposure. Bed bugs don't crawl inside from outdoors; instead, they hitchhike their way from place to place on suitcases, bags, used mattresses, and secondhand furniture. People can even be a vehicle for these opportunistic pests.

In this article, our local pest control company will identify the signs of bed bug activity and explain how and where to look for these biting pests, as well as what to do if you find evidence of a bed bug infestation in your home (or business).

How to tell if you have bed bugs

If you're worried about a possible bed bug problem in your space, look for the following signs:

  • Bed bug bites
First things first, you'll probably notice red bite marks on your arms, legs, and other exposed areas. Bed bug bites often show up in lines or clusters.
  • Live bugs, nymphs & bed bug eggs
Seeing a live bed bug is a dead giveaway. Adult bed bugs are small, about the size (and shape) of an apple seed. Prior to a blood meal, they have flat, reddish-brown bodies; after a blood meal, their bodies swell and become more elongated and darker in color. Younger bed bugs, called nymphs, are similar in appearance to adult bed bugs but are smaller and lighter in color. Bed bug eggs are tiny and pearl-white in color.
  • Blood stains
These nighttime feeders often leave behind blood stains on sheets, pillowcases, or mattresses.
  • Bed bug feces
Look out for small, rust-colored spots on sheets, mattresses, and furniture.
  • Shed bed bug skins
As bed bugs grow, they shed their exoskeletons. Finding tiny, translucent shell in their usual hangouts is a strong indicator of an infestation.
  • Musty odor
A strong musty odor can accompany significant bed bug infestations.

How to check for bed bugs in your home

To check for bed bugs in your home, grab a flashlight (or use the one on your phone), and check the following areas:

  • Carefully inspect the seams, tags, and edges of your mattress and boxspring.
  • Look for blood stains, dark fecal spots, and shed skins on your bedding.
  • Check the cracks, joints, and crevices of the bed frame and headboard as well as any screw holes or seams.
  • Inspect the seams, tufts, skirts, and cushions of upholstered furniture.
  • Examine the cracks, joints, and crevices of nightstands, dressers, and other wooden furniture.
  • Search the edges of the room where wall meets the floor and also the edges and under rugs and carpets.
  • Inspect behind and inside electronic devices and also electrical outlets.
  • Look over the seams, folds, and edges of curtains and wall hangings.
  • Check inside closets.

By thoroughly inspecting these areas and using the right tools, you can identify signs of bed bugs and address the problem early.

What to do if you find bed bugs during your search

If you discover bed bugs or evidence of bed bug activity while searching, get in touch with a pest control company that specializes in bed bug control. Ignoring a bed bug problem will not make it disappear; in fact, it will only get worse and may even spread to other parts of your home or to a neighboring unit. The same applies to commercial facilities; bed bugs will go wherever people are, and they won't wait for an invitation.
