What do fleas look like?
Fleas are small, flat-bodied, and wingless insects that are typically reddish-brown in color. They have six legs, a pair of antennae, and specialized spines and bristles that help them move through a host's hair. Fleas range in size from 1/12 to 1/6 of an inch long.
How long is the flea life cycle?
The flea life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The entire life cycle can take as little as a few weeks, depending on environmental conditions. In warmer climates, fleas will reproduce faster than in colder regions.
Do fleas jump?
Not only are fleas able to jump, they have powerful hind legs that allow them to jump impressive distances relative to their size. In fact, fleas can jump as high as 8" vertically.
How do pets get fleas?
Pets can get fleas from exposure to flea-infested animals or environments. Fleas lay eggs in the fur of animals, and the eggs can fall off and develop into larvae in the surrounding environment.
Can fleas live on furniture, carpets, or inside homes?
Flea eggs, larvae, and pupae can be present in carpets, furniture, and bedding as well as in or on other items in a home.
Do fleas transmit diseases?
Unfortunately, infected fleas are capable of transmitting disease to both animals and humans. One example is the bubonic plague, although it is rare. Fleas can also cause allergic reactions and anemia in some pets.
