How do I identify American cockroaches?

American cockroaches are reddish-brown in color and have a distinctive yellowish figure-eight pattern on their pronotum (the shield-like structures behind their heads). They are large roaches, reaching up to approximately two inches in length. Males of this species have wings that span their entire backs while females only have short wing stubs at the base of their abdomens.

Do American cockroaches fly?

American cockroaches are capable of flying short distances but are more likely to crawl.

What attracts American cockroaches?

American cockroaches are attracted to dark, damp, and warm environments, which is why they’re often found in basements, crawl spaces, kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms.

These pests are also attracted to food sources, such as food scraps, paper, glue, and other substances that are starchy, sugary, or greasy. American cockroaches will also consume other insects.

Are American cockroaches harmful?

American cockroaches are not structural pests in that they do not cause physical damage to homes or buildings. They may damage books, wallpaper, and other clothing though.

The biggest threat these pests pose is to health. American cockroaches carry viruses, bacteria, and parasites on their bodies and can introduce them into homes and businesses. Diarrhea, dysentery, and food poisoning caused by salmonella are a few of the health risks associated with American cockroaches. They can also trigger allergic reactions and asthma symptoms in sensitive individuals.

How can I tell if I have an American cockroach infestation?

Although American cockroaches are mainly active at night, you might catch them scurrying across your kitchen counter or floor when you turn the light on.

Another indication of an American cockroach problem is the presence of 8-mm long, dark-colored egg capsules near food sources or in areas where they are likely to hide out.

American cockroaches will leave behind small droppings with blunt ends wherever they go. Since they are similar in appearance to mice droppings, you may need to look for other signs or consult a professional.

American cockroaches produce a pheromone that has been described as a musty odor; in the case of larger infestations, this may be more pronounced.

How can I get rid of American cockroaches?

While there are plenty of natural or DIY remedies for cockroach control suggested on the internet, they are not always effective and could actually make the problem worse. The best way to get rid of American cockroaches is to contact a pest control company for professional cockroach treatments. At Greenway Pest Solutions, we offer pest control services for homes and businesses that include accurate pest identification and effective solutions that eliminate entire infestations.
